About This Qualification
The Level 3 Award in Assessing Vocationally Related Achievement is a recognised vocational assessor qualification for individuals who assess vocational skills, knowledge and understanding.
Often referred to as the AVRA qualification, it combines underpinning knowledge of assessment principles with the practical skills required to conduct effective assessment with real learners.
Unlike ACWE, which focuses specifically on assessing occupational competence in the work environment, AVRA focuses on assessing vocational skills, knowledge and understanding in appropriate assessment contexts outside the learner’s workplace.
Throughout the AVRA assessor course, you will develop the ability to design appropriate assessments, select and use different assessment methods, prepare learners and resources, administer assessments, collect and analyse evidence, make assessment decisions, provide constructive feedback and maintain appropriate assessment records.

Unit 1 Understanding the Principles and Practices of Assessment
This knowledge-based unit develops your understanding of assessment principles and practices, including assessment methods, planning, learner involvement, assessment decisions, quality assurance, information management and relevant legal and good-practice requirements.
Assessment: Written essay-style assignments.
Unit 2 Assess Vocational Skills, Knowledge and Understanding
This is the practical competence unit of the AVRA qualification.
You will demonstrate your ability to carry out genuine assessment activities involving 2 real learners/candidates.
As part of SJA’s practical assessment plan, you will design 2 assessments using 4 different assessment methods from those specified within the qualification unit and complete the required assessment processes with your learners.

- Normally be 19 years or older.
- Have appropriate subject or occupational knowledge relevant to the area in which you intend to assess.
- Have access to 2 real learners/candidates.

- Be able to design and administer appropriate assessments.
- Be able to collect and review learner work and assessment evidence.
- Be able to produce evidence demonstrating your own assessment practice.
- Have suitable English-language and digital skills to complete written assignments and assessment documentation.

Practical Assessment with 2 Real Learners Is Mandatory
The Level 3 Award in Assessing Vocationally Related Achievement cannot be achieved through written assignments alone.
To demonstrate your practical assessor competence, you must carry out genuine assessment activities involving 2 real learners/candidates.
As part of your practical assessment, you will:
- Work with 2 real learners/candidates.
- Design 2 assessments.
- Use 4 different assessment methods from those specified within the qualification unit.
- Prepare and administer the assessment activities.
- Collect and review learner work and assessment evidence.
- Make and record appropriate assessment decisions.
- Provide constructive feedback to your learners.

- Demonstrate how you manage confidentiality, data protection and the secure handling of learner and assessment information.
SJA does not accept simulated learners/candidates as a substitute for the required practical assessor evidence.

How You Will Be Assessed
The Level 3 Award in Assessing Vocationally Related Achievement combines written knowledge assessment with practical assessor evidence.
There are no traditional final examinations.
Unit 1 — Written Essay-Style Assignments
Understanding the Principles and Practices of Assessment is assessed through written essay-style assignments.
Your written work will demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of assessment principles and practices.
Unit 2 — Practical Assessment
Assess Vocational Skills, Knowledge and Understanding requires you to demonstrate your actual competence as an assessor.
You will work with 2 real learners/candidates, design 2 assessments using 4 different assessment methods from those specified within the qualification unit, administer the assessments, collect and review learner evidence, make assessment decisions, provide constructive feedback, maintain appropriate records and demonstrate confidentiality and data-protection practices.

Certification & Recognition
On successful completion of all required units and assessments, and once your assessor has confirmed that you have met the required assessment criteria, your achievement will proceed through the required quality assurance and certification process.
Your assessor’s confirmation of completion is followed by Internal Quality Assurance (IQA) and, where applicable, External Quality Assurance (EQA) and awarding organisation approval. If additional evidence, clarification or amendments are requested during the quality assurance process, you will be required to provide the necessary evidence before your achievement can be finalised for certification.
The certification process normally takes approximately 3–5 weeks following formal completion and assessor confirmation, subject to successful completion of the required quality assurance and awarding organisation processes. This timeframe should be treated as an estimate rather than a guaranteed certification date.
Once certification has been completed, you will receive an electronic certificate (e-certificate) confirming your achievement of the Focus Awards Level 3 Award in Assessing Vocationally Related Achievement (RQF).
If you require a printed certificate, this can be requested for an additional £7 administration fee, plus the applicable postage or courier cost. Postal charges are payable by the learner for both UK and international delivery and will depend on the delivery destination.
This regulated Level 3 assessor qualification develops and recognises competence in assessing vocational skills, knowledge and understanding. It can support progression towards broader assessor and quality assurance qualifications, subject to relevant entry, experience and occupational requirements.
