About This Qualification

About This Qualification

The Level 5 Diploma in Teaching (Further Education and Skills) (RQF) is the full occupational teaching qualification for individuals who wish to teach within the Further Education and Skills sector. It has been developed in line with the current occupational standards for Learning and Skills Teachers and prepares learners to teach confidently across a wide range of educational and vocational settings.

How You Will Be Assessed

Unlike many academic qualifications, there are no final written examinations. Instead, you will demonstrate your knowledge, skills and professional competence through a structured portfolio of evidence and real teaching practice.

This assessment approach reflects the occupational nature of the qualification, allowing you to apply what you learn directly within your teaching environment while receiving ongoing support and feedback from your assessor.

Portfolio of Evidence

Throughout the programme, you will build a professional portfolio demonstrating that you have met all learning outcomes and assessment criteria.

Your portfolio may include:

  • Reflective journals
  • Teaching resources
  • Assessment records
  • Learner feedback
  • Professional discussions
  • Observation reports
  • Witness testimonies
  • Professional development records

Your assessor will review your portfolio throughout the programme, providing constructive feedback to help you continually improve.

  • Plan learning.
  • Deliver engaging teaching sessions.
  • Differentiate learning activities.
  • Manage learners professionally.
  • Assess learner progress.
  • Reflect on and improve your teaching practice.

Observations are developmental as well as summative, helping you build confidence while demonstrating occupational competence.

Professional Discussion

Towards the end of the programme, you will participate in a minimum 30-minute professional discussion. This allows you to demonstrate your professional knowledge, explain your teaching decisions and reflect on your own practice.

The discussion also provides an opportunity to explore how educational theory has influenced your teaching and professional development.

Continuous Assessment

Your progress is assessed throughout the programme rather than at a single point in time.

This means you receive:

  • Regular tutor feedback.
  • Ongoing portfolio reviews.
  • Support to improve evidence.
