About This Qualification

The Focus Awards Level 3 Award in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools (RQF) is a regulated, knowledge-based qualification designed for people who want to develop their understanding of supporting teaching and learning in a school environment.

The qualification is suitable for existing school support staff, people preparing to work in a school and learners who want to progress towards a higher-level teaching assistant or specialist support role.

It develops essential knowledge relating to communication, professional relationships, school organisation, child and young person development, safeguarding, confidentiality, legislation and the wider education context.

Because this is a knowledge-based qualification, learners are not required to be employed in a school in order to enrol. However, access to school policies, procedures and realistic examples may support understanding and assignment development.

Who Is This Course For?

The Level 3 Award in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools is suitable for:

  • People who want to begin a career as a teaching assistant or learning support assistant.
  • Existing school support staff who want to strengthen their professional knowledge.

  • Individuals who want to develop knowledge of child development and safeguarding.
  • Support staff seeking progression to a Level 3 Certificate or Diploma qualification.
  • Learners who are not currently employed in a school but want to prepare for future employment.

Practical / Workplace Requirements

This is a knowledge-based qualification. Learners are not required to demonstrate practical workplace competence and do not need to be working in a school.

Assessment focuses on knowledge and understanding of communication, school organisation, child development and safeguarding. Learners may use examples from employment, volunteering, previous experience, case studies or research where appropriate.

Learners must not include confidential or personally identifiable information about children, young people, families, colleagues or schools in their assignments. Any examples must be anonymised and handled in accordance with safeguarding and data-protection principles.

How You Will Be Assessed

The Level 3 Award in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools is internally assessed through a portfolio of evidence. Learners must demonstrate achievement of every learning outcome and assessment criterion within all four mandatory units.

Portfolio evidence may include:

  • Written assignments
  • Worksheets and structured learning activities
  • Projects or reports
  • Records of oral or written questioning
  • Learner reports
  • Relevant work products, where available
  • Recognition of Prior Learning, where appropriate and approved
  • Other valid evidence agreed by the assessor

Although the specification permits a range of portfolio evidence, this qualification is knowledge-based. Most learners will therefore complete written assignments, structured activities, research tasks and assessor questions rather than practical observations.

The qualification is graded on a Pass / Refer basis. There is no traditional final examination.

If additional evidence or clarification is requested during the quality assurance process, you must provide the required information before certification can be finalised.

Certification is normally issued within 3–5 weeks following assessor confirmation, subject to successful completion of the required quality assurance and awarding organisation processes. Please note that this is an estimated timeframe and is not a guaranteed certificate issue date.
