Who Is This Course For?

This qualification is specifically for teaching assistants currently employed in schools who’re ready for greater responsibility. You must be working in a school to complete this course. It suits:

Classroom support staff who already work with small groups independently
TAs in primary schools wanting to lead interventions and cover classes

Ambitious teaching assistants considering teaching as a future career

Level 4 Certificate for Higher Level Teaching Assistants

If you're ready to become a Higher Level Teaching Assistant, this qualification gives you the credentials schools recognise. Many schools offer higher pay scales for HLTA-qualified staff. Talk to our team if you're wondering whether this is the right time to pursue HLTA status.

What Can You Earn as a Higher Level Teaching Assistant?

Higher Level Teaching Assistants typically earn between £26,000 and £32,000 annually in the UK, compared to standard TA salaries of £18,000-£24,000. That’s a potential salary increase of 20-30% once you’ve got HLTA status. Many schools have specific HLTA pay points or allowances that recognise your additional responsibilities. Location matters – London schools often pay £30,000-£35,000 for HLTA roles. Plus, this qualification opens doors to senior TA positions, covers supervisor roles, and can be your stepping stone into teaching if that’s where you’re headed long-term.

Study Hours

You'll need around 360 guided learning hours to complete this certificate - it's a substantial qualification with 7 mandatory units totalling 36 credits. This is significantly more in-depth than Level 3 TA qualifications. Most working teaching assistants complete it within 12-18 months whilst continuing their school jobs.

Assessment Method

You'll be assessed through a combination of portfolio evidence, written assignments, and workplace observations. This includes demonstrating your ability to work with individuals and small groups, support SEN pupils, and handle higher-level responsibilities. Your assessor will observe you working in your school setting to verify your practical competence.

Course Duration

The typical completion time is 12-18 months for TAs studying part-time around work. Because you need to gather substantial workplace evidence across different contexts and situations, this isn't a quick qualification. You've got up to 24 months from enrolment to complete, giving you plenty of flexibility.

Course Format

Learning materials are delivered 100% online with 24/7 access, but you'll complete practical assessments in your workplace. You'll study theory online, apply it in your school, gather evidence from your daily work, and submit everything digitally. Your tutor provides remote support, though workplace observations happen in person.

Entry Requirements

You must be currently working as a teaching assistant in a school - this isn't negotiable because the qualification requires substantial workplace evidence. There aren't other formal entry requirements, though many learners have completed Level 3 TA qualifications first. You should be at least 16 years old.

Pricing Details

The course costs £375.00, which covers all learning materials, tutor support, workplace observations, and your certificate. This is excellent value for a Level 4 qualification with 36 credits. We offer flexible payment plans to spread the cost across several months, making it manageable on a TA salary.

Certification

Upon successful completion, you'll receive the Focus Awards Level 4 Certificate for Higher Level Teaching Assistants (RQF). This is Ofqual-regulated (QRN: 601/8533/8) and recognised across England and Northern Ireland. Schools understand what this qualification means and many have specific HLTA roles or pay points for qualified staff.

Support Provided

You'll have a dedicated tutor who'll guide you through portfolio building, mark assignments, and conduct workplace observations. They understand school environments and the realities of TA work. You can contact them via email or phone for support, and they'll provide detailed feedback on all assessed work.

This qualification is awarded by Focus Awards, an Ofqual-regulated awarding organisation. You can verify its accreditation on the Ofqual Register of Regulated Qualifications.

Why Choose SJA Academia for Your HLTA Qualification?

We’ve supported hundreds of teaching assistants in achieving HLTA status. Here’s what makes SJA Academia the smart choice for your professional development.

Study Around Your School Commitments

You're working full-time in a busy school - you can't stop your job to study. Our online platform lets you access materials during evenings, weekends, or holidays. Submit evidence and assignments when it suits you, not according to rigid course schedules that clash with term time.

Tutors Who Understand School Reality

Your tutors have worked in schools and understand the demands TAs face. They'll help you identify evidence from your daily work, suggest ways to demonstrate competence naturally, and won't ask for unrealistic proof. They know what good HLTA practice looks like in real classrooms.

Evidence Gathering Made Simpler

Building a portfolio whilst working feels overwhelming. We'll show you how to capture evidence as you work - lesson plans you're already creating, observations you're already conducting, SEN support you're already providing. You're doing the work anyway, we help you document it properly.

Clear Route to Teaching

Many HLTAs eventually train as teachers. This qualification is your first step. We can support your progression to Level 3 Award in Education and Training, then Level 4 Certificate, and ultimately Level 5 Diploma if teaching's your goal. We'll map the complete pathway.

Your Route to HLTA Status

Get started in three straightforward steps:

1

Enrol and Plan Your Journey

Sign up online, arrange payment or set up a payment plan, and access your materials immediately. Your tutor will contact you to discuss your current TA role, the evidence you'll need, and how to integrate studying with your school work schedule.

2

Study, Apply Knowledge, and Build Evidence

Work through the seven mandatory units whilst continuing your TA role. Apply what you're learning in real classroom situations with pupils. Gather evidence from your daily work - observations, planning documents, SEN support records, group work outcomes. Your tutor will review evidence regularly and guide you on what's needed.

3

Complete Assessments and Achieve HLTA Status

Submit your portfolio, complete final assessments, and have your practical work observed in school. Once everything's approved, you'll receive your Level 4 Certificate for Higher Level Teaching Assistants. Many of our learners negotiate pay increases or promotion to HLTA posts as soon as they qualify.

HLTA Certificate Frequently Asked Questions

Do I automatically become an HLTA after completing this course?

The qualification gives you the knowledge and skills for HLTA work, but "HLTA status" is technically a separate designation. However, many schools recognise this Level 4 Certificate as equivalent to HLTA status and will promote or reclassify you accordingly. Check your school's policy on how they define and pay HLTA roles.

Can I study this if I'm a TA in a nursery or private school?

You need to be working in a school setting where you can gather appropriate evidence. State-maintained schools work best. Nurseries, pre-schools, or private tutoring settings might not provide the range of experiences needed. Speak to us about your specific workplace before enrolling.

How much time will I need outside school hours?

Expect to dedicate 5-8 hours per week to studying, writing assignments, and organising evidence. Some weeks will be lighter, others heavier depending on assessment deadlines. Most TAs manage this during evenings and weekends, with lighter study during intense school periods like exam season.

Will my school support me with observations and evidence?

You'll need cooperation from teachers and your line manager for observations and evidence verification. Most schools are supportive when TAs pursue professional development, especially qualifications that benefit the school. Discuss your plans with your headteacher or line manager before enrolling to confirm they'll help.

Can this lead to becoming a qualified teacher?

Yes, it's a recognised pathway. After completing the HLTA Certificate, you can progress to teaching qualifications starting with our Level 3 Award in Education and Training, then Level 4 Certificate, and Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training. Many former TAs use this route into teaching.

What if I move schools during the course?

You can continue as long as your new school employs you as a TA and will support evidence gathering. Inform your tutor when you move so they can work with your new school for observations. Most evidence is transferable, though you might need to gather some new examples in your new setting.

Do I need Level 3 TA qualifications before starting this?

There's no formal requirement to have Level 3 first, though many learners do. If you've been working as a TA for several years without qualifications, you can go straight to Level 4. However, if you're new to TA work, completing the Level 3 Award in Supporting Teaching and Learning first builds a better foundation.

How does this compare to the HLTA assessment route?

Some TAs achieve HLTA status through a separate HLTA assessment process rather than this qualification. Both routes are valid. This Level 4 Certificate is more in-depth, takes longer, and covers broader competencies including SEN support. The HLTA assessment is faster but less comprehensive. Both are recognised by schools.
